On Saturday, February 22nd, 2020, Maui Fire Department received reports of a brush fire on the southwest side of Kahoʻolawe. After four days of uncontrolled burning, an estimated 6,400 acres has already been scorched by the flames. Unfortunately, Maui Fire Department crews have been unable to battle the blaze from the ground or air due to the serious threat posed by unexploded ordnance (UXO) left on the island from the days of its use as a live fire training site by the U.S. Navy. Without a significant rain event, the fire may continue to burn for days, weeks or even months. Although the majority of the damage has been in the form of the burning of the natural landscape, the Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Commission has also lost several buildings, water catchment tanks, all-terrain vehicles, water crafts, irrigation supplies, restoration equipment and planting materials to the fire. Any and all support is appreciated.
Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission, sponsored by Pacific American Foundation is a tax-exempt public charity (federal tax ID #99-0266119). All contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowable by law. No goods or services were provided in exchange for your generous financial donation.
