Pacific Whale Foundation Presents World Oceans Day
A healthy world ocean is critical to our survival, producing 70% of Earth’s oxygen and providing food for billions of people, among other needed services. Yet, as a global society, we are not taking proper care of such an invaluable resource, causing ocean acidification due to an increased amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere and adding 8 million tons of plastic per year.
World Oceans Day is an annual celebration of the ocean, its importance to our lives, and how each of us can protect it, no matter where we live.
Held on June 08, this year’s theme is ‘Together We Can’, encouraging people from around the world to share what they are doing to protect the ocean, showcasing the idea that, together, we can make a difference.
This World Oceans Day, June 8, you can join Pacific Whale Foundation in advocating for a healthy ocean with shoreline and reef cleanups, a free citizen science micro plastic sampling cruise, keiki art contest, a Party for the Ocean, treasure hunt and more.
Saturday June 8 activities to support the official 2019 theme of ‘Together we can’:
Beach Clean Ups
Join Pacific Whale Foundation, Surfrider Foundation Maui Chapter, and the County of Maui in celebrating World Oceans Day by keeping marine debris out of the ocean. Beach clean ups will be held at Kamaole III beach in Kihei, Paia Bay, and Kahului Harbor from 9am-11am. Participants in cleanup efforts and data collection will receive discounts at the Pacific Whale Foundation Ocean Store and a chance to win passes to Maui Ocean Center!
Citizen Science Microplastic Tow
Assist with marine debris research by participating in our FREE World Oceans Day citizen science ecotour. Participants will assist with annual research by conducting a microplastics tow while en route to Olowalu reef where we will clean up reef rubbish. While in the water, snorkelers will collect seawater samples, filtering for debris and recording data with the assistance of trained Marine Naturalists on board Ocean Odyssey. Call 800-942-5311 to RSVP as space is limited.
Keiki Art Contest
Keiki are encouraged to celebrate with a special World Oceans Day theme at Ocean Camp, including a ‘Pollution Solutions’ art project.
Your keiki can compete in the contest as well! Have them artistically answer the question, “How will you help to keep plastic out of the ocean to protect marine animals?” Submissions can be uploaded to our Facebook page using #reuseorrefuse and tagging us @pacificwhalefoundation. One lucky keiki will receive a snorkel trip for 4 or a gift certificate for the online Ocean Store, which offers a selection of eco conscious products and alternatives to single use plastics.
Party for the Ocean!
Party for the ocean at Maui Brewing Co in Kihei!
Join us on the lanai to play, laugh, learn and talk story, where we will present findings from 6 years of marine debris monitoring in Maui Nui. Compete for a cause and the chance to win great prizes with Oceans Day BINGO and a Cornhole tournament, try your hand at upcycled crafts, visit with eco vendors, and learn how you can get involved with Pacific Whale Foundation’s core Research, Education and Conservation programs. A portion of proceeds from house beer sales will benefit Pacific Whale Foundation. Remember to drink responsibly.
Treasure Hunt
This Week Hawaii and Pacific Whale Foundation have partnered to bring you an exciting World Oceans Day treasure hunt. Follow clues that lead you on a treasure hunt through Front Street to find the hidden pineapple and win a fabulous prize, including free ecotour tickets and eco-friendly straw packs from our Ocean Store! Clues will be posted on WOD June 8 at ThisWeekHawaii.com/treasurehunt
