Pacific Whale Foundation's Greg Kaufman talks about Orcas in captivity

 

 

CEO of Pacific Whale Foundation, Greg Kaufman and Cindy Paulos talk with Manny Oteyza, Producer of  Blackfish, about his Movie "Blackfish". The movie documents the circumstances leading to the 2010 death of Dawn Brancheau, a renowned SeaWorld trainer who was killed by Tilikum, a 12,000-pound orca. This film provides a compelling look at the cruelty of keeping whales and dolphins in captivity, and has been instrumental in educating millions of people worldwide about the dark side of using these majestic marine mammals for human entertainment. Also on the show is Howard Garrett, co-founder and Executive Director of Orca Network and an activist in the "Free Lolita" campaign.  Named "Lolita" and shipped to the Miami Seaqaurium, Lolita remains in captivity there 40 years later in a 35' x 80' x 20' concrete tank

Greg Kaufman is the founder and president of Pacific Whale Foundation and author of numerous books, scientific and popular publications on cetaceans. A pioneer in non-invasive humpback whale research off Maui in the mid-1970s, Greg founded Pacific Whale Foundation in 1980, and committed his new organization to educating the public, from a scientific perspective, about whales and their ocean habitat. Greg oversees the longest running humpback whale research programme off Australia (began in 1984) and Ecuador.
