Ricky Kej Shanti Samsara

Ha a great talk with Grammy Award winner Ricky Kej .Ricky is an Indian composer, music producer and Environmentalist. In 2015, he won a Grammy at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards for his album Winds of Samsara, a collaboration with South African flautist Wouter Kellerman, in the Best New Age Album category.^[1] The project, his 14th studio album, had made a debut at #1 on the US Billboard New Age Albums Chart in August 2014,^[2][3] a first for a person of Indian origin.^[4] The album also peaked at #1 on the Zone Music Reporter Top 100 Radio Airplay Chart in the month of July 2014.^[5]

His album Shanti Samsara - World Music for Environmental Consciousness was launched on November 30, 2015 at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then French President, Francois Hollande.^[6] In the months since its launch, Kej has traveled widely speaking about conservation and the environment, including a visit to the Republic of Kiribati, where he interviewed and created music with three-term ex-president, Anote Tong.^[7]

Kej has previously composed the soundtrack for four feature films in the Kannada language, and is credited with over 3,000 placements for Radio and Television Jingles.^[8] He also composed the music for the 2011 Cricket World Cup opening ceremony, held at Dhakka on 17 February 2011.^[9] On April 26, 2016, Kej travelled to Jaipur, India where he was named as goodwill ambassador for Save the Children's new global campaign, Every Last Child.^[10] On July 18, 2016, Kej was awarded the Excellence and Leadership award as a global humanitarian artist at the United Nations Headquarters, New York and performed excerpts from Shanti Samsara live in the United Nations General Assembly Hall. Kej concluded his performance at the United Nations General Assembly by saying, "To end, I want to state the obvious ... Climate change is real ... Climate change is human induced. Climate change is affecting us all ... and our actions affect countries on the other side of the world."^[11][12]

Following his return to India, a gala live performance of Shanti Samsara was given at the Bangalore Palace on 23 July 2016, with many of the original artists performing.^[13]Shanti Samsara has earned prizes from the Global Music Awards,^[14] the International Acoustic Music Awards,^[15] and was a finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.^[16]

In 2018, Ricky was named in the prestigious "Real Leaders 100 List". Real Leaders (A Signatory to the United Nations) curates this list of leaders who 'Inspire the Future'. In May 2018, Kej was honoured by The House of Commons, Canada for "Outstanding Musical and Humanitarian Achievement".^[17] Ricky was the only representative from India.^[18][19] Ricky Kej's life and journey as a musician is now taught to 7th Grade children in India as part of the ICSE syllabus English textbooks.^[20]Ricky Kej is notably also a professor at the prestigious National Institute of Advanced Stud

Ogmundur "Thor" Johannesson, from Iceland

 Ebb and Flow’s 20th anniversary will feature a special free show  Saturday, with Icelandic guitarist, Ogmundur "Thor" Johannesson in a solo recital. There will be a pre-concert discussion at 6:30 and show at 7:30.

Ogmundur Thor Johannesson was born in 1980 in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. He started learning classical guitar when he was 10. From 2000 to 2002, he studied classical guitar in Barcelona under the tutelage of Amaesson Amadou, Ricardo Jesus Gallen and Alex Garob Sadalo. In June 2008, Ogmundur graduated from Salzburg Mozarteum University of Music under the instruction of Marco Diaz Tamayo. 

 

Ogmundur has won a number of honors and awards, including the 1st place in the 7th Andrés Segovia International Guitar Competition held in Linares, Spain, the 2nd prize in the 2nd Agustin Barrios International Guitar Competition held in Lambesc, France, as well as prizes in Tokyo and Bangkok international guitar competitions. He performed at various music festivals and concerts including Nordic Music Days in Reykjavik as well as concerts and in Brazil, USA, Israel, India, Britain, Austria, Russia, etc. He received excellent critics for the Tíbrá Concert Series in Iceland in 2005 and 2008 from the Icelandic Morning Newspaper: “…Ögmundur is an astonishing guitarist”, “…technical security… emotional depth… convincing… with fire… guitarist of great expectation…” Ogmundur currently resides in Berlin.  

 

Ogmundur is on a concert tour around China, which has taken him to Hong Kong, Taiwan and Beijing. The works played on Ocean without Paths - Icelandic music for guitar are inspired by the volcanoes, hot springs, glaciers and awe inspiring nature of Iceland and represent the unique charm of the Icelandic people and their country. The program has been recorded and presented worldwide.

Kristie is the Deputy Executive Director of Pacific Whale Foundation and manages day-to-day operations. She has been a lifelong advocate for animals and is passionately committed to protecting marine mammals and their environment. Kristie obtained her B.A. in Law and Justice from Central Washington University and her J.D. Cum Laude from Seattle University, where she studied animal law. She is licensed to practice law in Washington State and the State of Hawaii. We talk about welcome home the Whales this Saturday, and the upcoming auction.
